June Nickless

Friends land in RAF Bunker

On 17th March 30 Friends of PSSC reported to the Guardroom at RAF Uxbridge before moving off to the RAFA Club for lunch. The group then boarded their transport to be on parade for a tour of the Bunker housing the Battle of Britain Operations Room.

Advance warning had been given of the 76 steps down – and 76 up! – which the contingent managed with ease. At the bottom a yellowing corridor led to the Ops Room where an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide gave a full briefing.

We sat around the large plotting table marked with a map of the south east of England and the wartime airfields. Here wartime WRAF personnel had wielded long rods to push the flagged markers showing the aircraft positions of RAF Fighter Command as the Battle of Britain progressed. On the back wall, boards for each airfield with evocative names like Biggin Hill, Northolt and Debden had red, amber and green lights to indicate readiness for battle.

Above, overseeing the activity was the glass fronted room where Churchill watched and waited
